Abstract

Purpose of research. The aim of the research presented in the article is to analyze how Polish schools educate young people in the field of mental health protection. The article particularly draws attention to education at the upper-secondary level.

The method of research. A study was conducted among young adults to assess to what extent the issues related to mental health and its protection are present in education in upper secondary schools. In addition, the draft core curriculum for upper secondary schools and textbooks for this stage of education were analyzed.

Results. The study of young adults has shown that only few of them at upper secondary education as part of school education had classes on the most common psychiatric disorders and places where you can turn to for help in the event of such problems. Analysis of the core curriculum and textbooks showed that within the subjects of biology, physical education and upbringing in the family are elements related to mental health.

Conclusion. Steps should be taken to make education about mental health more present in education, especially in upper secondary schools, when young people are particularly vulnerable to mental health problems.
